Put Me Through to I.T. Please

Evil spirits lurk within my computer. I have been trying to exorcise them, but with little effect. Where’s the Pope when you need him?

I caught one of those little Trojan fellows trying to sneak in on Monday. I thought I had put him into solitary confinement with only the most basic of provisions before he faced the firing squad a short time later.

Alas, I fear he has left behind his putrid aura, floating around my hard drive like a foul stench.

UPDATE:
What a way to while away the hours. I have downloaded and run Giant, Ad-Aware and Ewido, but I think it was CWShredder that finally saved the day.

As far as I can make out I had been hijacked, although the experience was a lot less Hollywood that it sounds.

As a result of my (albeit unplanned) IT research I have also been compelled to install Mozilla Firefox. I don’t know whether it’s Firefox or all the junk that’s now been stripped from my machine, but I am on FIRE!

I’d better dash, before a real IT person comes along and blows my cover.

Have you got a virus checker and firewall?

If not:

Download AVG virus scanner (the best free one)

http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1/lng/us/tpl/v5

and activate XP firewall. Unless you're not running xp then google "Zone Alarm" and get the free one of those.

If you have a virus check and a firewalll, then, hmmmmm you shouldn't have any problems with trojans, or worms or viruses unless you've not got virus/firewall set up properly.

Thanks for this Mat, you’re the techie friend I never had. It was actually AVG which found the trojan. Maybe it was a coincidence that the hijacking thing happened in the same week, if indeed that’s what the problem was.

As you can probably tell I’m mainly fumbling around in the dark when it comes to these things...

I’ll be off to check out your blog soon, but I’ve had way too much of this computer for one day :-)

Ah, my techie-ness has failed me myself.

Blogger and the server I host my blog on are having troubles communicating. So no blog updates for me.

Emchi: I use Zone-Alarm, and it is better. But XP's own is much easier, and I assumed a level of IT illiteracy.

If you run Spybot immuniser, IE should be just as good as Firefox(Which I personally don't like)

Ooh, a techie discussion on my blog - whoever would have thought...

Thank you both. I won't embarrass myself by trying to contribute.

Windows will have to actually start randomly deleting stuff before I decide to ditch PCs.
